AWS vs Microsoft Azure: Which Cloud Certification Has Higher ROI in 2026?

AWS holds ~32% of the global public cloud market. Microsoft Azure holds ~23%. Both are growing. Both pay well. But the certification path that maximises your career ROI in 2026 depends on something most career advice ignores: your industry.

Market share isn't the whole story

AWS has more total jobs. Azure has fewer total jobs but is growing faster in enterprise and federal markets. The interesting move is figuring out which one dominates in your specific industry.

  • Healthcare: Azure dominates. HIPAA compliance maturity + Microsoft 365 integration make it the default.
  • Financial Services: AWS leads enterprise banks; Azure leads insurance and regional banks.
  • Government / Federal: Azure has the edge (Azure Government, deep Microsoft contracts), but AWS GovCloud is a strong contender.
  • Startups / Tech: AWS dominates. Default choice for almost every venture-backed startup.
  • Oil & Gas (Houston market): Split — Halliburton, Schlumberger, Shell lean AWS; ExxonMobil and Chevron lean hybrid with strong Azure presence.
  • Retail: Azure has gained share because retailers don't want to fund AWS (an Amazon competitor).

2026 salary data (US, mid-career, ~5 years experience)

RoleAWSAzure
Cloud Solutions Architect$135,000$128,000
DevOps Engineer$140,000$132,000
Cloud Security Engineer$155,000$148,000
Cloud Data Engineer$150,000$140,000
Cloud Admin (entry)$85,000$82,000

The pattern: AWS roles pay 5–8% more on average, but Azure roles have higher year-over-year growth in many enterprise verticals. If you're optimising for current paycheck, AWS edges it. If you're betting on 5-year growth in regulated industries, Azure is competitive.

The certification ladder (2026)

AWS path

  1. AWS Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) — foundational, $100 exam, useful as a starter
  2. AWS Solutions Architect Associate (SAA-C03) — the most popular cloud cert in the world, $150 exam
  3. AWS Solutions Architect Professional or specialty (Security, Data, Network) — $300 exam, senior-track

Azure path

  1. AZ-900: Azure Fundamentals — $99 exam, foundational
  2. AZ-104: Azure Administrator — $165 exam, the most popular Azure cert
  3. AZ-500: Azure Security Technologies or AZ-305 (Solutions Architect) — $165 exam, senior-track

Which is harder?

Subjectively, AWS exams are broader — they test you across hundreds of services in increasingly obscure detail. Azure exams are deeper — fewer services but heavier on configuration and identity. AWS Solutions Architect Associate has a roughly 70% first-attempt pass rate; AZ-104 sits at about 65%.

For career-changers with zero cloud experience, both certifications take similar effort: about 80–120 hours of focused study over 8–10 weeks.

The honest answer: learn both

Multi-cloud is the future. Almost every enterprise that we trained students for in 2025–2026 runs both. A "cloud engineer" job posting today is twice as likely to require both AWS and Azure as it is to require only one. The fastest career growth path:

  1. Pick the one your current employer or target employer uses. Get certified.
  2. Work in that ecosystem for 12–18 months.
  3. Pick up the other one. Watch your salary jump 15–25%.

Where Mac Jason Academy fits

We teach both. Our AWS Solutions Architect programme covers SAA-C03 from architecture through CloudFormation and OpsWorks. Our Azure stack covers AZ-900, AZ-104, and AZ-500 in sequence. The faculty includes practicing cloud engineers from Mac Jason Consult — instructors who run real workloads on both clouds for Fortune 100 clients.
